CUET English Syllabus
The CUET English (Core) section is designed to test comprehension, vocabulary, and literary aptitude of Class 12 students. The syllabus typically covers three main areas:
1. Reading Comprehension
Based on three types of passages:
- Factual passages — Based on academic/scientific content
- Literary passages — Excerpts from prose and poetry
- Narrative passages — Story-based or scenario-based texts
Questions test understanding, inference, tone, theme, and vocabulary in context.
2. Vocabulary
- Word meanings (synonyms and antonyms)
- One-word substitutions
- Idioms and phrases
- Sentence completion
3. Literary Aptitude
- Literary devices and terminology
- Interpretation of poetic devices
- Understanding narrative techniques
How to Prepare for CUET English
Reading Comprehension Practice
- Read daily: Newspapers like The Hindu, Indian Express, or passages from NCERT English textbooks.
- Practice 1 passage daily: Start with factual passages, progress to literary and narrative.
- Time yourself: Aim for 10-12 minutes per passage (3-4 questions per passage).
- Focus on main idea: Read the first line and last line of paragraphs for quick understanding.
- Practice inference: Don't just look for direct answers — learn to infer from context.
Vocabulary Building
- Learn 10-15 words daily: Use resources like Word Power Made Easy or High School English Grammar by Wren & Martin.
- Use words in sentences: Writing helps retention better than rote memorization.
- Learn word roots: Understanding Latin and Greek roots helps with multiple word meanings.
- Focus on context usage: CUET tests vocabulary in context, not isolation.
Literary Aptitude
- Study NCERT English literature: Literary devices, poetic devices, and prose techniques.
- Learn terms: Metaphor, simile, alliteration, imagery, symbolism, allegory, etc.
- Practice explanation: For each literary device, understand it with 2-3 examples.
